More Songs About Buildings and Food

Talking Heads · 1978

More Songs About Buildings and Food is a record built on restraint: eleven songs, no wasted syllables, no unearned textures. It treats funk as geometry, soul as syntax, and rhythm as architecture. It does not ask to be loved — it asks to be inhabited.

24 Frames

Abbas Kiarostami · 2017

Abbas Kiarostami’s final film, 24 Frames, comprises twenty-four uncut, static shots — each ninety seconds long — observing nature, animals, and thresholds between interior and exterior. Beginning with animated movement superimposed on Bruegel’s Hunters in the Snow, it proceeds into real-world stillness, testing how much meaning resides in time, attention, and unmediated presence. Released posthumously at Cannes 2017, it is a rigorous, unsentimental essay on perception and impermanence.

Bejeweled (video game)

PopCap Games · 2001

Bejeweled is a browser-based match-three puzzle game developed by PopCap Games and first released in 2000. Players swap adjacent gems to form lines of three or more identical gems, clearing them and triggering cascading falls. Swaps that fail to produce a match revert automatically. It features untimed and timed modes — the former ending when no moves remain, the latter requiring point accumulation to stall a depleting timer — and later introduced competitive multiplayer with special gems.

Candy Crush Saga

King · 2012

Candy Crush Saga is a match-three puzzle game where players swap adjacent candies to make lines or columns of three or more identical colours. Matches remove candies, trigger cascading falls, and generate points — with bigger matches producing special candies that clear larger board sections. Each level imposes a specific goal — like collecting a number of candies or clearing jelly-covered tiles — within a fixed move limit. Lives are lost on failure and regenerate over time or via purchase. The game introduced saga-based progression and cross-platform sync, with mobile versions built for touch and offline play.

Cooking Mama (video game)

Office Create · 2006

Cooking Mama is a sequence of brief, touch-driven minigames representing kitchen tasks. Each lasts under 10 seconds. Players follow instructions on the top screen and act on the bottom screen using the stylus. Failure occurs on serious error or time expiry. It offers crisp, immediate feedback but no cumulative learning or systemic logic. Office Create developed it and enforced strict quality standards over feel and content — but not over depth or coherence.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Nintendo · 2008

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a Nintendo-published platform fighter released in 2008. It uses percentage-based damage, ring-out objectives, simplified controls, and Smash Ball-triggered Final Smashes. It supports local multiplayer with multiple controllers, custom profiles, and single-player modes including The Subspace Emissary.

Crypt of the NecroDancer

Brace Yourself Games · 2015

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a rhythm-gated roguelike released in April 2015 by Brace Yourself Games. All movement and attacks must occur on the musical beat. Enemies follow fixed rhythmic patterns — some on every beat, others on subdivisions. Missing the beat resets scoring and risks damage. The dungeon has four zones, each with four levels. Input supports dance pad, keyboard, or gamepad.

Bejeweled Blitz

PopCap Games · 2010

A high-speed, one-minute match-three game that trades contemplation for velocity — and rewards relentless, real-time decision-making.

Diner Dash

PlayFirst · 2003

Diner Dash is a time-management game where players direct Flo to complete restaurant service tasks under increasing time and mood constraints.

9:27

F-Zero GX

Nintendo · 2003

F-Zero GX is a high-speed futuristic racing game built around track memorisation, reflexes, and precise vehicle control. It retains core mechanics from F-Zero X but expands them with customizable machines, energy-based boosting and damage, dynamic track elements (dash/jump plates, obstacles), and advanced cornering techniques like drifting and snaking. Its structure includes Grand Prix, Story, Time Attack, and multiplayer modes, all governed by energy management, vehicle tuning, and escalating difficulty. The game was developed by Amusement Vision and published by Nintendo for the GameCube.

Rage-baiting

Rage-baiting isn’t bad faith—it’s good maths with bad consequences.

Slow living

Slow living isn’t about quitting the world—it’s about refusing to let speed decide what counts as real.

Algorithmic amplification

Algorithmic amplification isn’t what algorithms do—it’s what happens when we mistake feedback loops for intention.

ASMR

ASMR isn’t relaxation. It’s neural grooming, repackaged for YouTube.
