A Night at Birdland, Volume 1

The Art Blakey Quintet · 1956

The sole verified fact about 'A Night at Birdland, Volume 1' is that it emerged from a 1954 live session during which Art Blakey declared his commitment to young musicians on-mic. Nothing else — personnel, label, venue, sound, repertoire context, or release status — is confirmed by the provided material.

Tenor Madness

Sonny Rollins Quartet · 1956

Tenor Madness is a 1956 Prestige Records album by Sonny Rollins, notable for the title track—the only known recording featuring both Rollins and John Coltrane. Rollins assembled the rhythm section from Miles Davis's 'First Great Quintet' (Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones), with Coltrane appearing exclusively on the 12-minute title track. The session occurred two weeks after that same quartet recorded with Davis for the albums Workin', Relaxin', and Steamin'. The title track's B-flat blues melody, though credited to Rollins here, originated as Kenny Clarke's 'Royal Roost' in 1946. Other tracks include Rollins's original 'Paul's Pal', a blues reinterpretation of 'When Your Lover Has Gone', the ballad 'My Reverie', and a fast 4/4 treatment of Rodgers & Hart's 'The Most Beautiful Girl in the World'. Critics regard the album as among Rollins's finest early work and a landmark of 1950s modern jazz combo recordings.

All Night Long

Basil Dearden · 1962

Basil Dearden’s All Night Long transposes Shakespeare’s Othello to a single night at a Thames-side jazz party, starring Patrick McGoohan as a scheming drummer, Paul Harris as a bandleader, and Marti Stevens as his wife. With contributions from Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus and John Dankworth, the film treats jazz not as ornament but as narrative grammar — its rhythms, improvisations and silences shaping character and consequence. Shot in black and white by Edward Scaife, written by blacklisted screenwriter Paul Jarrico, it is a study in mediation, mistrust and the cost of control.

Crossing Delancey

Joan Micklin Silver · 1988

Crossing Delancey (1988), directed by Joan Micklin Silver and adapted by Susan Sandler from her play, follows Isabelle Grossman — a New York bookseller torn between literary aspiration and familial expectation — as she navigates a matchmaker’s introduction to Sam Posner, a pickle merchant. Set against the Lower East Side’s Orthodox Jewish community, the film charts quiet emotional recalibrations rather than grand transformations, anchored by Amy Irving’s restrained performance and Reizl Bozyk’s luminous final screen role.

Uncut Gems

Benny Safdie, Josh Safdie · 2019

A 2019 crime thriller set in New York’s Diamond District, Uncut Gems follows Howard Ratner, a jeweller and compulsive gambler, over a few chaotic days in 2012. When a rare Ethiopian opal arrives at his store, he leverages it across multiple high-stakes bets while evading loan sharks and managing fractured personal relationships. Directed by Benny and Josh Safdie, the film uses aggressive editing, claustrophobic cinematography, and a pulsing electronic score to simulate the physiology of addiction. Adam Sandler delivers a career-defining performance as a man whose intelligence and energy are indistinguishable from his self-destruction.

The Golem

Paul Wegener, Henrik Galeen · 1915

The Golem (1915) is a partially lost German silent film co-directed by Paul Wegener and Henrik Galeen, adapting Jewish folklore into a proto-horror narrative about a clay creature reawakened in modern times. With only fragments surviving — held by Deutsche Kinemathek — its story, performances, and themes remain partly speculative. It establishes the golem as autonomous yet unstable, but lacks the psychological or visual cohesion of later Weimar horror. Its value lies in lineage, not completeness.

Dreyfus affair

1894–1906

Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish artillery officer, was wrongly convicted of treason in 1894 on the strength of disputed handwriting evidence and imprisoned on Devil's Island, while the army suppressed subsequent proof identifying the real culprit. Émile Zola's 1898 open letter J'Accuse galvanised public opinion, and Dreyfus was eventually pardoned in 1899 and fully exonerated in 1906, an affair that split French society and exposed institutional antisemitism at the highest levels of the military.

The Holocaust

1933–1945

The Holocaust, the systematic murder of approximately six million Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1941 and 1945, proceeded through mass shootings, ghettoization and purpose-built extermination camps including Auschwitz-Birkenau and Treblinka, formalised at the January 1942 Wannsee Conference, alongside the murder of millions of others including Soviet prisoners of war, Roma and Sinti people, and people with disabilities. Historians divide over the intentionalist and functionalist interpretations of when and how the decision for total extermination was actually made, a debate that remains unresolved even as the scale and mechanics of the genocide itself are not in dispute.
