Meghe Dhaka Tara

Ritwik Ghatak · 1960

Ritwik Ghatak’s 1960 Bengali drama Meghe Dhaka Tara follows Nita, a young refugee woman in Calcutta whose relentless self-sacrifice sustains her displaced family until her body gives way. Shot in muted tones by Dinen Gupta, scored by Jyotirindra Moitra, and anchored by Supriya Devi’s restrained performance, it frames Partition not as history but as lived syntax — one that assigns value, defers futures, and naturalises extraction. Its power lies in accumulation, not climax.

Titash Ekti Nadir Naam

Ritwik Ghatak · 1973

Ritwik Ghatak’s 1973 film adapts Adwaita Mallabarman’s novel to trace the generational unraveling of a Bengali fishing community along the Titas River. Structured as interwoven tragedies — abduction, madness, widowhood, starvation — it treats Partition not as event but as ambient pressure, dissolving kinship, ritual, and language. Baby Islam’s austere black-and-white photography and Ghatak’s fragmented, Brechtian staging resist catharsis in favour of accumulation: meaning settles like silt, not strikes like lightning.

Partition of India

15 August 1947

British India was divided into India and Pakistan in August 1947, ending decades of colonial rule and an independence movement that stretched back to the previous century. The partition triggered mass displacement across new religious lines, with estimates of deaths ranging from 200,000 to two million and displaced people numbered between 12 and 20 million, figures that remain disputed rather than settled. It left lasting hostility between the two new states that continues to shape the region.

Partition of Ireland

3 May 1921

The Government of Ireland Act of 1920 split the island into two self-governing territories, drawing Northern Ireland's border around six counties chosen specifically because they gave unionists a workable majority, even though two of those counties had nationalist majorities of their own. A boundary commission set up under the 1921 treaty to revisit that line spent years preparing its case, only for its 1925 report to leak, be suppressed by all three governments involved, and leave the original six-county border permanently fixed in place.

Division of Korea

August 1945

Korea was split at the 38th parallel in August 1945 after two young American officers, working overnight with a commercial atlas rather than any deep regional expertise, proposed the line to ensure Seoul fell under American rather than Soviet control. Separate governments under Kim Il Sung and Syngman Rhee formed by 1948, both claiming the whole peninsula, and the resulting Korean War of 1950 to 1953 killed well over a million civilians before ending in an armistice that left the country divided along almost the same line, without a peace treaty ever being signed.

Relational art

Relational art didn’t invent social practice—it renamed it, then claimed it as theory.
