The Eight Mountains

Felix van Groeningen, Charlotte Vandermeersch · 2022

Co-directed by Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch, The Eight Mountains follows Pietro and Bruno across thirty years as their childhood bond in the Italian Alps fractures, endures, and reshapes itself through distance, grief, and divergent choices. Shot by Ruben Impens and scored by Daniel Norgren, it treats landscape as character and time as weather — a slow, tactile drama about inheritance, solitude, and the quiet persistence of place.

Steep (video game)

Ubisoft · 2016

Steep is a sports video game developed by Ubisoft Annecy and published by Ubisoft. It was released worldwide on 2 December 2016 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. It is an online multiplayer extreme sports game set in a vast open world based on real mountain ranges including the Alps, Alaska Range, and mountains in Japan and Korea. Players explore a freely navigable open world set in the Alps, centered on Mont Blanc. The game can be played from either a first-person or third-person perspective. The game uses GoPro-style camera angles during races. The four main activities are skiing, wingsuit flying, snowboarding, and paragliding. Later DLC added rocket-powered wingsuit flying, sledding, BASE jumping, and speed riding. Players switch between activities using the game's menu wheel.

Celeste (video game)

Maddy Makes Games · 2018

A tightly wound platformer where every mechanic serves both challenge and character. Its movement grammar is sparse but deeply interwoven. Its narrative is explicit, not allegorical—and its design never compromises difficulty to accommodate theme.

SSX

EA Canada · 2000

SSX (2000) is a PlayStation 2 arcade snowboard racer where tricks directly fuel speed via a boost meter. Developed by EA Vancouver (then EA Canada) under the EA Sports BIG banner, it replaces simulation with rhythm, timing, and terrain-as-launchpad. Uber Tricks, rivalries, and open-world structure belong to sequels — the original delivers tight, repeatable races across discrete global courses. It works because tricks are mandatory, not decorative. It wears thin because it offers no stakes beyond the next jump.

Burton Snowboards

Burton didn’t invent snowboarding—it weaponised polyurethane and rope to force ski resorts to let people ride.

Moncler

Moncler didn’t invent the down jacket—it weaponised it for altitude, then outsourced its meaning to Milanese teenagers.

The North Face

A climbing jacket that became a target — first for altitude, then for robbery, then for bullying.

Japanese Alps

The Japanese Alps are three mountain ranges that bisect Honshu, Japan's main island, and hold the country's only active glaciers.

Brocken spectre

A shadow that lies about its own size — and tells the truth about how easily we misread the world.
9:48

K2

K2 is not a peak to visit — it’s a datum to verify, a face to resist, and a granite clock ticking from the Cretaceous.
11:08

Mount Everest

The highest mountain above sea level, on the China–Nepal border, and a height that has been measured again and again since 1856.
8:34

Mount Fuji

A tundra-climate volcano with perfect symmetry — not a living system, but a geological signal written in ash and ice.
8:38

Matterhorn

A mountain that is all structure and no system—geology made visible, biology erased.
9:02

Andean condor

A bald, red-faced sky-dominant scavenger that nests at 5,000 m—and refuses to do anything small.
