Don Giovanni

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart · 1958

Don Giovanni is not a portrait of a libertine — it is a machine for exposing how systems (musical, moral, social) break when one person refuses their terms. This 1958 recording captures that architecture in unvarnished detail.

Geoffrey West

Cities scale like organisms—but the 15% salary bump isn’t a law, it’s a rough correlation with no mechanism, margin of error, or boundary conditions.
10:19

Per Bak

Self-organized criticality is not a law of nature—it’s a sandbox with one working toy.

Catastrophe theory

René Thom classified every possible way a stable system can suddenly break into seven geometric templates. The mathematics is settled; its 1970s use to explain animal and human behaviour was not, and a public critique said so.

Mandelbrot set

Benoit Mandelbrot

Mandelbrot visualised a known mathematical object with unprecedented clarity — making topology legible through computation.

Riemann hypothesis

Bernhard Riemann

Riemann’s 1859 hypothesis is a precise, unproven claim about zeta zeros — central to prime distribution, yet untouched by proof for 165 years.

Postmodernism

Robert Venturi

Robert Venturi’s ‘Postmodernism’ is two books — not a style, not a movement, not a building. It is a method for reading complexity into architecture where modernism saw only noise. It trades certainty for interpretation. It trades universality for local meaning. It trades elegance for richness. Its power lies in what it permits, not what it prescribes.

9:54

Robert Venturi

Venturi didn’t build buildings—he built arguments, and they dismantled modernism from the inside.

Ultima Online

Origin Systems · 1997

Ultima Online is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game released by Origin Systems on 24 September 1997. It was Origin’s first persistent online game. It was partially designed as a social and economic experiment. Its initial features included persistent player housing, skill-based character progression without levels or classes, a craft-based and player-driven economy, and unrestricted player-versus-player combat. Servers enforced either consensual or non-consensual PVP depending on type — Trammel, Felucca, or Siege — each with distinct rules for combat, travel, and item loss. The release of Trammel led developers to rename the original world Felucca and make its environment more grim. Siege servers restrict players to one character slot and limit travel options. Ultima Online is one of the earliest graphical MMORPGs. Its success was pivotal in EA’s decision to make Origin an online-only company after the completion of Ultima IX: Ascension in 1999.

Path of Exile

Grinding Gear Games · 2013

Path of Exile is a systemic ARPG that trades narrative continuity for procedural depth, instanced purity, and build-driven replayability.

11:43

Dwarf Fortress

Bay 12 Games · 2006

Dwarf Fortress is a procedural simulation that demands reading over reacting, patience over progress, and interpretation over instruction. Its strength is systemic coherence—not accessibility.

RimWorld

Ludeon Studios · 2016

RimWorld is a construction and management simulation game developed and published by Ludeon Studios for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It functions as a story generator driven by procedural 'storyteller' algorithms that select events to shape narrative experiences. Players oversee stranded colonists on a procedurally generated planet, forming and sustaining a colony while managing survival needs, mental stability, and external threats. Colonists are task-driven rather than directly controlled, and the game ends via spaceship construction, AI-assisted ship recovery, or DLC-specific endings. Events scale in difficulty and are influenced by configurable storyteller modes and difficulty presets.

Visa Inc.

Dee Hock · 1958

Visa is a payment infrastructure built on delegation: banks issue cards, Visa provides the rails and branding, and consumers pay fees embedded in every transaction. Its 1970 restructuring into a member-owned, decentralised association — conceived and led by Dee Hock — was a deliberate rejection of hierarchy. Yet its 2025 volume ($14.2 trillion) reflects not distributed decision-making but tightly coordinated standards enforcement. The ‘chaordic’ ideal remains descriptive, not operational.

Social organization

Social organization isn’t about people—it’s about the invisible wiring that makes them act together, and it’s broken where it pretends to be neutral.

Food web

It flattens reality to reveal pattern—but only if you accept that lions, ladybirds and lichens are all just nodes.
